About Us

My name is Ashley and I have lived in Guatemala for 13 years. I met my husband while working as a Peace Corps Volunteer in 2011 and never left Guatemala. After Peace Corps I worked with a local nonprofit organization where I started to develop my own dream of working with artisans. In 2018, I started working with approximately 8 women and started Handmade with Hope. We now work with approximately 15 women in the Lake Atitlan/Sololá region of Guatemala.

The women we work with are extremely talented beaders and have been beading for most of their lives. Because of limited economic resources, the women were unable to study when they were young or were only able to study for a few years in elementary school. The women are very good at beading, but unfortunately there isn’t a big market for them to sell their products here. When they do find work they aren’t usually paid fairly for it.

I wanted to change that so, with the help of my husband, I started working with the women, paying them fairly for what they do, and looking for people to buy their products.
